Wish

Open your app and make a wish. It is claimed to be the best shopping app worldwide, though these statements should be taken with a pinch of salt. But there are really worthy offers on it.

Interface 10/10

Like most apps for online shopping, Wish is mostly a virtual shop window. Browse through item cards, see pictures, read descriptions, rate prices, and if you consider some item worthy, order it. Pictures can be zoomed in.

Features 8/10

It’s made quite simple. Browse, add to your cart, pay, wait for delivery. Most packages are tracked (though there may be some glitches). Enter your correct home address to make sure your orders will be delivered correctly.

For most items there are options: size (when it comes to clothes, primarily, though I prefer offline shopping), color, compatibility. For example, when you buy a protector film or a case for your phone, you’ll be prompted to select the modification before placing your order.

The app accepts credit cards, PayPal, Google Pay (and Apple Pay, as reported), and some other payment methods. To start shopping, you must add at least one account. As for me, PayPal is the perfect option; but if you prefer good old credit cards, get yourself a virtual or secondary one with limits you consider reasonable and use it instead of your primary one. In addition, Wish sometimes gives away coupons and promo codes you can use on more discounts for items of choice.

Performance 7/10

The app itself is made quite decently. It loads pages quickly, shows all the pictures, displays all the texts in decent English (some online stores, especially Asian, speak terrible Chinglish, leaving a lot to guess).

Some features are logical in a very strange way. For example, of you want to remove an item from your cart, you cannot just tap X or “Close”: you need to edit the quantity and select zero pieces. It’s logical, but it’s an inhuman sort of logic.

Pricing

See, this app is all about shopping, but all the goods are provided by third-party sellers, so I’ll speak about them mostly. First of all, this section was named “Chutzpa”, and the rating would have been 100 out of 10. As you open the app, you see bright and loud 90% discounts, 92% discounts, even 96% discounts. I never ran into 99%, but it would be no surprise. Anyway, all those discounted positions are sold in local stores for about the same price, with rare exceptions.

Yet you can find some really interesting deals; though beware of counterfeit or refurbished items. A dual SIM tablet is only $70, though it’s manufactured by some unknown brand, probably Chinese. Bags for $20 or $30 are advertised as “genuine leather”; in fact, it can be artificial but decent.

The Verdict

If you see life as gambling, like placing risky bets, and hope for a big prize, you’ll appreciate Wish a lot. But don’t believe the hype. Most discounts here are just cheap tricks, and searching a bit deeper may show you more trustworthy items, though not so heavily advertised. In addition, overseas shipping may mean that you have virtually no guarantee and no service at all. But if you’re willing to take that risk, you’re welcome. As for me, I only bought two cables for my phone, and so far, after three months, they are okay.
